Invisibility and Women; Power and Love
Date
October 2020
Location
Ratnauli, (Muzaffarpur, Bihar) India
In the austere landscapes of rural Bihar, India's poorest state, the lives of women often remain unseen and uncelebrated. Yet, they form the unacknowledged backbone of the local economy, particularly as men migrate to more affluent regions in search of work. This collection of photographs seeks to illuminate the resilience and ingenuity of these women, who have forged paths to freedom, wealth, and happiness in the absence of their husbands.
During the 2020 Bihar Legislative Election, I had the privilege of working alongside independent candidate Sanjay Sahni. It was through this experience that I encountered remarkable women, each a testament to strength and perseverance. These women, left to manage households and livelihoods, have embraced roles traditionally reserved for men, displaying an extraordinary capacity for adaptation and leadership.
The images depict everyday scenes of empowerment: a woman tending to her livestock, another negotiating prices at the local market, and yet another overseeing the harvest. Each photograph captures a moment of triumph in the face of adversity, a snapshot of a life where invisibility has given way to recognition and respect.
These photographs are not just a visual narrative but a tribute to the indomitable spirit of Bihar's women. Each image, taken with the explicit consent of the subjects, adheres to the highest standards of privacy and respect. Through this collection, I aim to shine a light on the vital contributions of these women, who sustain the economy and culture of rural Bihar. Their stories of resilience and empowerment are a reminder that true wealth lies not in material prosperity but in the strength and spirit of those who face life's challenges with unwavering courage.
